Developed and officially released by the LEGO group in 2004, Lego digital designer is a software tool that allows the to model and prototype a LEGO creation by placing bricks on a canvas and creating their own designs. A key advantage of this is the scope of projects is not limited by the number of particular bricks on hand. In addition, s could submit their designs to The Lego Company itself and receive a box with all the pieces necessary to complete the model, and the instructions needed to build it. LEGO announced in November of 2011 that this delivery service would be discontinued on January 16, 2012. The main reasons for this were overwhelming complexity to meet demands and inability to keep up with quality standards for all customers.
Models can be saved and shared via .LXF files, a proprietary format by the LEGO company, or screenshotted and shared in that method. Lego Digital Designer was also used as one of the modeling tools to storyboard and model for The LEGO Movie.
The software is available in both English and German and is licensed as Freeware. Lego Digital Designer's last stable release was version 4.3.11 released on January 9, 2018, but is no longer being ed with new updates. This version is available on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and Mac OS X 10.1 or higher.
